Searching EvidenceNet
The EvidenceNet repository contains resources, events and networks. A free text search from the home page allows you to enter search terms and search within all, or any one of these categories. The search looks through the title, description, keywords and author (where relevant) of the resources, events and networks and returns results in order of relevance.
From any search results page you can use our faceted search facility to narrow down your results further. Resources in EvidenceNet are catalogued according to broad pedagogic theme, resource type and disciplinary cluster; events by pedagogic theme, date and location; and networks by pedagogic theme. Selecting from any one of these further categories gives you a more focused set of search results. The meaning of the terms used within each of these categories is explained in the sections below.
Pedagogic Theme
Resources, events and networks in EvidenceNet have been assigned to up to five pedagogic themes. Within these 22 themes we have tried to encompass all of the topics that are of relevance to learning and teaching in Higher Education. Because there are only 22, these themes are necessarily broad, but we hope that they provide a way for users to navigate through the content of EvidenceNet effectively. The list below gives an indication of the more specific topics that fall under each theme. We intend to update this list as the content of EvidenceNet increases.

Disciplinary Area
Resources and events in EvidenceNet have been assigned to up to five discipline areas. We have used the subject groupings of the 24 Higher Education Academy Subject Centres along with a further category, ‘generic', to give 25 discipline areas in total. While the resource may derive from that subject centre, these headings are intended to indicate the subject category to which it belongs and do not necessarily imply that they are associated with that subject centre.
The list below gives an indication of some of the more specific disciplines that fall under each area, with those more obvious disciplines omitted for the purpose of brevity. The list is not exhaustive but should serve to give users a broad understanding of what is covered by each discipline area.

Abstract
|

Article
|
A catch-all term to encompass pieces of work that report or focus on some aspect of evidence but which do not fit into any other category. Resources which fall under this heading are articles suitable for publication in a journal but as yet unpublished, opinion pieces, articles from publications other than journals. E.g. article in Exchange magazine. N.b. Distinct from journal article (below)

Book
|
Any stand alone publication, typically over 50 pages in length. Can be electronic or in hard copy.

A chapter or extract from a book. E.g. Where a piece of work is a chapter in an edited collection.

Case Study
|
A write up of a working example of a particular learning and teaching issue or experience such as a report of an individual instance of a teaching and learning, or policy intervention occurring within a particular context.

|
A paper written for presentation at a conference.

Conference Report
|
A report of a conference, or conference session (rather than a report written to be delivered at a conference.) A reflective commentary rather than a purely descriptive piece of work.

Advanced Search
If you wish to set specific parameters for a resource search then you can do this with the advanced search feature (This option is currently available for resources only.) None of the fields in this search is mandatory so you may specify as much or as little information as you want.
In step 1 you can specify words or phrases that should or should not be contained in the resource details using the four fields below:
- The exact phrase: e.g. entering "interdisciplinary assessment" yields results containing the words "interdisciplinary assessment" in that order.
- At least one of the words: e.g. entering "interdisciplinary assessment" yields results containing either "interdisciplinary" or "assessment".
- Without the words: e.g. entering "interdisciplinary assessment" yields results containing neither "interdisciplinary" nor "assessment".
- With all of the words: e.g. entering "interdisciplinary assessment" yields results containing both "interdisciplinary" AND "assessment" (but not necessarily occurring together).
This search looks through the title, author, description and keywords related to each resource. You are able to fill in any number of these fields.
Step 2 allows you to specify an author and/or a date range for the resource. Because of the different naming conventions that are often employed (e.g. ‘Burgess, R.', ‘Robert Burgess', ‘Professor R. Burgess' etc.) we suggest that you enter a surname only to give your search a greater chance of yielding the results you want. You may specify a precise date, a month and a year, or just a year for either end of your date range search. You are able to leave this search open-ended if you wish.
After running your advanced search you will be taken to a search results page where you can use the faceted search function to narrow down results further.
