Become an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

The Academy’s Professional Recognition Scheme offers individuals the opportunity to gain recognition as Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy. This is appropriate if you have an academic role with some teaching commitment in Higher Education.

Being an Associate Fellow recognises effectiveness in specific aspects of teaching and enhancing the student learning experience, combined with scholarship, research and/or other professional activities.

It is awarded to professionals who can demonstrate that they meet the criteria of Descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education.

Typically, those likely to be at Descriptor 1 (D1) include:

  1. Early career researchers with some teaching responsibilities (e.g. PhD students, GTAs, contract researchers/post-doctoral students etc.)
  2. Staff new to teaching (including those with part-time academic responsibilities)
  3. Staff who support academic provision (e.g. learning technologists, learning developers and learning resource/library staff)
  4. Staff who undertake demonstrator/technician roles that incorporate some teaching-related responsibilities
  5. Experienced staff in relevant professional areas who may be new to teaching and/or supporting learning, or who have a limited teaching portfolio
