Best Practice - Entrepreneurship Teaching and Learning - the Student Experience

DATE: 11 Mar 2011
START TIME: 09:30 am
LOCATION/VENUE: Northumbria University, UK

Description

A workshop presented by the BMAF Entrepreneurial Learning Special Interest Group.

Summary

Both academic and practitioner audiences have been debating the topic of entrepreneurship education for a number of years: particularly the question of whether it can be taught at all has been discussed widely and catchphrases such as ‘born vs. made’ or ‘nature vs. nurture’ have been used widely to describe the essence of this debate. Whilst this best practice event does not attempt to resolve this debate, it does offer participants an opportunity to listen to some suggestions of how entrepreneurship can be taught (or facilitated) within a Higher Education context.

Speakers/facilitators

Prof Andy Penaluna, Enterprise Educators UK & BMAF, Professor of Creative Entrepreneurship, Swansea Met. University
Dr Stephanie Macht, Senior Lecturer, Northumbria University
Vijay Vij, Visiting Lecturer, Newcastle University Business School
Steve Ball, Senior Lecturer, Northumbria University
Tom Spence, Student Entrepreneur.

There will be 2 main sessions each including a presentation followed by interactive worshops:

  • Session 1
How can we teach entrepreneurship at an HE institution? - the student perspective
  • Session 2
Exploring the impact of entrepreneurial team teaching methods on students' entrepreneurial learning

The presentations will introduce aspects of entrepreneurship teaching and learning, with a specific emphasis on the student experience, which will be followed by workshop activities and debates. The latter are expected to spark discussions relating to all participants’ experiences and practice of entrepreneurship education at their institutions. The event will be complemented by a talk from a current entrepreneurship student (who also runs a real business outside of university) and who will add further insight into the student perspective of entrepreneurship learning and teaching.

This event is generously hosted by Northumbria University and is free to attend due to support from the HEA subject centre for Business Management Accountancy and Finance (BMAF).
