The Internationalisation SIG completed its first year of activities with a conference hosted by York St John University on 12/13 June 2008.
Around 38 delegates attended during the course of the day-and-a half event which focused on issues to do with Assessment and Employability of International Students.
The conference opened on the Thursday afternoon with a keynote session led by Jude Carroll of the Assessment Standards Knowledge Exchange (ASKe) at Oxford Brookes University which contrasted and compared assessment practices international students are familiar with to those they are likely to encounter in the UK, and considered the impact and difficulties this might cause.
In the evening delegates were entertained by an after dinner speech in which Professor David Maughan-Brown (the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of York St John University) recalled his experiences teaching in South Africa.
On the second day of the conference the issue of Employability was explored and Christina Kerr from Price Waterhouse Coopers was able to present an Employers' perspective, explaining how PwC are building a Global Competencies model which will help clarify the additional skills students need to develop during the course of their studies.
Further details on these and other sessions presented at the conference can be obtained by contacting Eleanor Lloyd Jones on bmaf.sig@brookes.ac.uk or 0116 236 2503. The Internationalisation SIG will continue with further workshops and events in 2008/2009 and details of these will be circulated to all SIG members in the near future.
