A seminar and workshop for experienced and novice researchers.
Organised by University Forum for HRD and BMAF Special Interest Group on HRD.
This workshop will explore creative approaches to gaining funding for HRD research and running funded research projects.
A specific focus will be on developing research projects exploring teaching, learning and assessment in HRD.
Speakers:
• Dr. Valerie Anderson will offer reflections on the experience of being involved in a CIPD funded project on the Value of Learning, and how she sought to build wider academic outcomes into a largely practitioner- focused project.
• Peter Evans will discuss developing a research focus within consultancy/ training projects. He will reflect upon the experience of developing an action learning focus within an EU-funded training project.
• Dr. Rick Holden and Sue Shaw will reflect on their experience of assessing proposals and agreeing outcomes for the UFHRD research honorarium, and consider what makes a good research proposal.
Other sessions will explore bid writing and research into teaching, learning and assessment in HRD.
There will be an opportunity to discuss proposals that workshop participants are developing. If you would like to discuss a prospective proposal or are considering applying for a UFHRD/SIG honorarium for Teaching and Learning, why not bring your ideas along to discuss at the workshop? The workshop was aimed at experienced and novice researchers, and sought to explore creative approaches to gaining funding for HRD research and running funded research projects.
A specific focus was on developing research projects exploring teaching, learning and assessment in HRD. Speakers included Dr. Valerie Anderson from Portsmouth Business School, Peter Evans from the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Rick Holden from Leeds Business School, and Sue Shaw and Paula Turner from Manchester Metropolitan University Business School.
The range of interesting topics discussed included
-reflections on the experience of being involved in a CIPD and European funded research projects;
- the challenges of seeking to build wider academic outcomes into a largely practitioner-focused project; the challenge of the researcher/client relationship;
building a research focus into a consultancy/training project;
the challenges of bid-writing and competitive tenders;
and how to develop a strategy for seeking research funding.
The workshop also explored the HRD SIG and University Forum for HRD 2008 Honoraria for small research projects.
The Honoraria exist to help to create, develop and inform leading edge HRD theory and practices.
In this 2008 round of funding, it is anticipated that up to six such awards will be made for research which focuses on teaching, learning and assessment in HRD.
The Honorarium should enable commencement (or completion) of work that might not otherwise be possible to be undertaken and which contributes to promoting HRD as a field of study and professional practice.
The closing date for the second call for applications is 7 November 2008.
Two further workshops are planned for the coming year.
