Description

Critical Reflection & Action Learning: possibilities and pitfalls

Hosted by Liverpool Business School in association with the Northern Action Learning Network and the international journal Action Learning: research & practice.

Introduction
Action learning is grounded in the approach pioneered by Reg Revans which holds that there can be no learning without action and no knowing without the effort to practice and implement what is claimed as knowledge. The Action Learning community is diverse and flourishing; however, Pedler et al. (2005) caution that the increased popularity of action learning has resulted in a shift away from ‘Revans’ classical principles’ (RCP) and questions whether or not such shifts constitute a dilution or an evolution of RCP.

This event will encourage responses to the above question by exploring action learning within a range of contexts and from different perspectives, academic and practitioner.

Expected outcomes

  • Share experiences of critical reflection and action learning, including possibilities and pitfalls,
  • Explore what critical reflection and action learning are; and potentially what they are not,
  • Discuss what works and what doesn’t,
  • Consider the evidence for the effectiveness of critical action learning in its various forms,
  • Facilitate the sharing of evolving practice and the publication of ‘accounts of practice’.
