Preparing for Academic Practice

Status: complete

Funding Initiative: CETL

Description

This CETL aimed to foster sustainability of graduate student development programmes both within the University of Oxford and with a network of UK Universities. It also aimed to foster sustainability of graduate student development programmes both within the University of Oxford and with a network of UK Universities.

It also aimed to:

  • Design and implement accredited subject specific teaching based programmes in all departments for post graduate research students and Contract Research Staff who want to be academics.
  • Reward staff involved in outstanding development of academic practice and post graduate students who are outstanding teachers.
  • Undertake evaluative and pedagogic research into development as an academic.

Social Sciences
The Social Sciences Division established a permanent university lectureship to co-ordinate future activity in the area of Teaching and Learning. 50% of this post was funded initially by the Centre. The postholder oversaw the Year 2 development programmes in three departments: Educational Studies, Politics & International Relations, and Sociology. Programmes in two further departments were brought on stream in Year 3, and in the remaining four departments in Year 4.

What is being offered to the wider teaching/subject community:

The University of Oxford convened a ‘Preparation for Academic Practice Network’ that formed the basis of dissemination involving large-scale implementation. The network consisted of seven institutions (including Oxford) which between them contain almost a quarter of the UK’s PGR students: the University of Cambridge; the London School of Economics; ImperialCollege; King’s College London; the University of Edinburgh; and the University of Warwick. Expertise on graduate skill development were also contributed to the Network by the UKGRAD programme.
