The BMAF Network serves to help all discipline groups and staff in this field to provide the best possible learning experience for students undertaking higher education

The overall aim of this project is to investigate the impact that an electronic submission system within a virtual learning environment has on providing timely and good quality feedback on assessment.
Most virtual learning environments (e.g. Blackboard, Moodle, WebCT) have an assignment submission facility built into them. A more advanced use of the facility can bring significant benefits for both students and their tutors. It can:
• Give the student immediate access to marks and assessor’s comments
• Reduce the overall time of assessment
• Issue automatic confirmation of submission
• Generate a summary of grades
The virtual learning environment used in Glasgow Caledonian University is Blackboard, however, it is believed that the findings from the evaluation will be of interest to the users of other VLEs which have an assignment submission facility.
The objectives of the study are:
• To investigate whether the system has an impact on the time needed to mark and second mark the coursework, and consequently whether it reduces the time the student needs to wait for feedback;
• To evaluate the ease of access to assessment feedback and marks achieved from the point of view of the student.
The system will be used and evaluated on two modules delivered by staff in the Division of People Management and Leadership – Organisational Issues in Practice and Personal and Professional Development Planning.
