Learning and Teaching: Where Next?

Chris Shiel, Associate Professor at Bournemouth University, has produced a report which examines the state of Learning and Teaching within the UK Business HE community.

The research is informed by a BMAF survey which was disseminated at the 2010 BMAF Conference and completed by 110 staff members. The results are also contrasted with the results of a 2007 survey of BMAF Key Contacts and Deans and similar work from 2005.

• Faculty Development Associates On-line Teaching Tips
  Faculty Development Associates provide a range of services to client universities which aims to improve accountability outcomes of instructional programmes. It provides workships, mentoring and advice on program design as well as a guide to online resources.
• HEER Database - The Higher Education Empirical Research
  An online research database comprising summaries of evidence-based published research on a range of topics related to higher education. It is intended for use by policy-makers, academics and researchers in higher education.
• HEFCE - Higher Education Funding Council for England
  'The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) distributes public money for teaching and research to universities and colleges. In doing so, it aims to promote high quality education and research, within a financially healthy sector. The Council also plays a key role in ensuring accountability and promoting good practice.'
• HEFCW - Higher Education Funding Council for Wales
  HEFCE's equivalent in Wales.
• HESA - Higher Education Statistics Agency
  HESA is the official agency for the collection, analysis and dissemination of quantitative information about higher education.
• Higher Education Academy
  HEA is an independent organisation funded by grants from the four UK higher education funding bodies, subscriptions from higher education institutions, and grant and contract income for specific initiatives. It aims to 'work with individual academic staff, discipline groups and senior managers in institutions to identify and share effective teaching practices in order to provide the best possible learning experience for all students.'
• Higher Education Academy Resource Database for Learning and Teachng Projects
  This website provided easy access to the thousands of resources HEA has produced, filtered by subject or thematic area.
• Institute for Learning (IfL) (FE)
  IfL is the professional body for teachers, tutors, trainers and student teachers in the further education (FE) and skills sector.
• JISC Learning and Teaching Practice Experts Group
  The Experts Group comprises of representatives from further and higher education and meets three times a year to receive updates from the e-Learning Programme, to offer advice and feedback to JISC funded project teams, and to comment on the direction of future work of the programme.
• Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA)
  QAA is an independent body funded by subscriptions from universities and colleges of higher education, and through contracts with the main higher education funding bodies. It exists to assure standards and improve the quality of UK higher education.
• Special Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT)
  A membership organisations for seconary schools and academies that works to raise achievement for pupils of all ages and backgrounds.
• Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA)
  SEDA is the professional association for staff and educational developers in the UK, promoting innovation and good practice in higher education. 
• Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP)
  TLRP existed from 1999 to 2009 and aimed to perform and promote excellent educational research and ensuring that it was used to enhance learning. Its website contains links to all the research is carried out.
