iBEE 2010 (Organised by CEBE)

Description

Building upon the success of prior iBEE events, this year’s interactive conference will focus on innovations in inter-disciplinary teaching and learning in the built environment

The event will allow educators to actively engage and learn from the best of a set of experiences and approaches and explore how they might be used in their own context. Through a range of studio-style interactive workshops, problem-based and project-based learning scenarios, participants will be able to sample a range of practical tools and techniques for effective course development and delivery.

This is a ‘can’t miss’ annual event for networking, CPD, sharing best practice and acquiring fresh ideas about how to teach. It is especially targeted at early stage career academics.

iBEE is a showcase for novel and creative approaches to teaching and learning and provides a unique opportunity for academics to experience effective and exciting ways of energising learning. The event will allow participants to:

  • Experience excellent and innovatory inter-disciplinary practice
  • Participate in hands-on workshops led by inspirational teachers and encounter innovation from the student perspective
  • Actively engage with and share new ideas through a series of speed-dating sessions
  • Explore synergies in the pedagogic styles and strategies of different subjects
  • Draw on the expertise of T&L leaders and innovators working across discipline boundaries

Workshop 1: ‘As you design so you evaluate’: the experience of integrating real estate and architecture in an intensive development project based in Hong Kong.
Nick Nunnington, Sheffield Hallam University

Experience the integrated working approach of Sheffield Hallam MSc Real Estate, MSc Technical Architecture and MSc Architecture students working together in an iterative process to evolve a high quality development solution that attempts to explore and reconcile tensions between the design, end user requirements and financing of development projects.

Workshop 2: Urban Design for students without a design background
Marga Bauza Munar,
Cardiff University

This interactive workshop will explore how students studying non-design subjects can learn the principles of urban design.

Workshop 3: 'If you want to get to there, why start from here?'
Tony Clelford,
University of Greenwich

The Design Project has always been an essential component of all design courses, precisely because it mirrors many aspects of professional practice. This workshop shows one of several ways of learning that can also mirror other aspects of modern professional practice.

Workshop 4: Learning from Life – Using ‘live’ projects in Higher Education
Dr Rachel Sara,
University of the West of England

This workshop will introduce the concept of using real projects, with a real client and a useable output for teaching in Higher Education
Workshop 5: Collapsing boundaries between planners and developers: working towards a shared understanding
Nick Nunnington,
Sheffield Hallam University

This workshop explores ways in which planning and real estate students (and practitioners) can benefit from a better understanding of the development appraisal process and how this can empower their negotiations to lead to a “win-win” solution.

Workshop 6: Problems don't come in disciplines
Gerard Wood,
University of Salford

The School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford has redesigned its undergraduate programmes to include multidisciplinary project work at all 3 levels. This workshop will focus on the development and implementation of the interdisciplinary module at final level, catering for 200 students from five different disciplines. Participants will have the opportunity to explore approaches to the design, delivery, management and assessment of such modules, and reflect upon the problems and solutions experienced
