The Changing Nature of the Studio as an Educational Setting [Working Paper No. 06]

Institutions are becoming increasingly aware of the need for ongoing evaluation of the combined academic and economic effectiveness of their facilities. While still largely believed to be the key learning setting for art, design and architectural education, the studio is coming under increasing pressure to prove its value, especially in response to what is often perceived as unacceptably low space utilisation by those responsible for the provision and management of physical resources.

This CEBE Working Paper outlines some of the observations, reflections, hypotheses and solutions, which have arisen in the process of exploring the challenges faced by the users and providers of studio space. The intention is not to dictate or to prescribe, but to hopefully stimulate an exploratory, more open and honest discourse around the ongoing value of, and opportunities for, a sustainable studio-based education.
