Final submissions will be reviewed by a member of the CEBE team and may also be passed to an expert within the field for additional review; editorial comments will be returned to the author. Completed approved submissions will be published on the CEBE website as part of the CEBE Briefing Guide Series under the assigned ISSN 1744-9839 and may also be considered for inclusion in CEBE’s on-line journal Transactions.
GUIDE STRUCTURE
A suggested outline for the contents of a CEBE Briefing Guide is detailed below, although authors may adapt this to suit specific topics:
- Paragraph about the author
- Introduction – the purpose of the Guide and how to use it
- Overview of the topic area and developments in the field
- Teaching and learning context - issues that influence the way this subject is taught and learnt
- Alternative models of teaching and learning this subject
- Problems to watch out for and tips on ways of addressing them
- Sources of good practice within and outside of the Built Environment
- Sources for further information or reading (published articles/web references etc.)
SUBMISSION FORMAT:
Briefing Guides should be submitted in electronic format, using Microsoft Word if possible, via email to CEBE at cebe@heacademy.ac.uk. Charts, tables, maps or photographs in gif, jpeg or tiff format can be included as separate files as e-mail attachments.
LENGTH: 4-6 pages of A4
EDITING: Briefing Guides are subject to copyediting for grammar, style, and format by CEBE.
General points regarding style and submission of Briefing Guides
- Text should be in Arial 11 point font
- Use standard MS-Word heading styles eg Heading 1 - 14pt Arial Bold, Heading 2 - 12pt Arial Bold Italic, Heading 3 - 12pt Arial
- The first word of each paragraph should not be indented
- Please use a single carriage return between headings and paragraphs
- Paragraphs should be aligned to the left (not justified) There should be 2 spaces after a full stop
- Hyphens should not be used to break words at the end of a line
- The material should be written in a user-friendly manner, rather than as a piece of 'academic work'
- Please avoid the use of footnotes
- The language should be understandable for a British audience. Words and phrases of foreign origin should be italicised, unless they are in common use as English idioms
Use '-ise' instead of '-ize', e.g. emphasize, but '-yse' instead of '-yze', e.g. analyse - For headings, please do not use capital letters (except for the initial letter), and use punctuation sparingly
- Tables and Figures should be provided as separate files, and not embedded within text files
Any references should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. The references should be listed in full at the end of the review in the Harvard referencing guide HSL-DVC 1,see:
