Introduction
Not only are small enterprises a key factor in the UK economy, the current Labour Government also sees small businesses as a major driving force for change in the economy as well as a means of ensuring the nations competitiveness in a global knowledge society. Many graduates from Built Environment courses are interested in setting up their own businesses or becoming self-employed as architects, planners or surveyors.
While there is substantial support from the various professional bodies on business set-ups, higher education institutions can and should contribute to the encouragement of entrepreneurship by fostering the right mindset and an awareness of business processes and enterprise skills. Business start-ups are not just for Business Studies students!
