Studio Teaching

Subjects such as architecture and landscape are often characterised by the centrality of the design studio within its teaching. The studio not only represents a physical location where learning takes place, but it also defines a method of learning, whereby students learn through the exploration design possibilities. Through a process of learning-by-doing, students develop the skills required to produce comprehensive designs, gain an understanding of the application of technical knowledge to design situations, and explore how theory and action inform each other. Studio teaching is often supplemented by lectures, seminars which impart the theoretical aspects of learning. Periods of experience within professional practice are also a common element of these courses.
