Study Visits and Field Work

Study visits and Field work provide students with valuable, structured experiences outside the classroom using the construction site or an urban area as live laboratories to train students in observation and data collection. Despite their usefulness as teaching tools, field work and study visits in HE are threatened due to many factors, not least health and safety issues, increasing student numbers and financial costs. In order to ensure student learning, field work and study visits need to be integrated into the curriculum, contain clearly defined tasks and learning outcomes and be properly assessed. There are a great many good approaches being used to tackle the aforementioned issues and CEBE would like to share the experience of 'practice that works' with the wider community.
