Women make up only 10% of the workforce within the built environment sector [National Association of Women in Construction]. Although there has been an increase in the number of women undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate studies, this has not contributed to an increase in women working in the industry. The Equal Opportunities Commission has criticised the sector as a 'no-go' area for women as retention and progression for females is very low. In spite of the widespread implementation of equality guidelines in the workplace, full gender equality remains elusive. The under-utilisation of human resources dependent on gender patterns is also of economic and social concern, especially for an economy with an ageing workforce.
These pages offer a collation of information sources in order to provide a better understanding of gender issues in the built environment. The pages list projects, reports and associated teaching materials for use in HEI curricula.
