Description

Bad Language: How Educational Discourse can be a Barrier to Student Success

London College of Communication, University of the Arts London

Friday 4 December, 13:30-16:30

This seminar considers the linguistic barriers that students may face in their first year on an undergraduate degree. After giving participants some examples of the problematic language on various art, design and media courses we will describe our HEFCE- funded Fellowship research into the perceptions of first year students and staff of the (in)accessibility of educational discourse at the University of the Arts London.

Participants will be asked to produce their own understanding/definition of key terms students have found problematic or ambiguous. We will describe and model some of the activities we use with subject staff to make their “teacher talk” more accessible to their students and ask participants to share any strategies they have used.

Celia Bishop, London College of Communication

Christine Bowmaker, Camberwell College of Art
