This two-day event will bring together participants working in Islamic Studies from a wide range of perspectives to discuss and share practice in teaching Islamic Studies in UK Higher Education today. The event will also be an opportunity to introduce participants to the Islamic Studies Network and its planned activity.

The event will open with an evening keynote address from Professor the Baroness Haleh Afshar before the conference dinner. During the main day there will be plenaries from Professor Robert Gleave and Professor Ron Geaves. The event will also include workshop sessions that will allow participants to discuss issues at a practical level. The first workshop session will be focused on discipline-specific questions in teaching Islamic Studies, while the second workshop session will raise cross-disciplinary issues. Key themes will include:

  • Teaching Islamic Studies from specific disciplinary perspectives (including Religious Studies; Middle Eastern and other Area Studies; History; Social Sciences; Law; Business and Finance)
  • Teaching introductory courses
  • Resource sharing and curriculum development
  • Student recruitment and employability
  • Teaching in relation to political issues and current events

As it will be a residential event, there will be many opportunities for informal networking and discussion.

This conference is open to those involved in teaching Islamic Studies at UK Higher Education Institutions. There is a fee of £50 event charge for employees of publicly-funded UK Higher Education Institutions, this fee includes dinner on May 25, overnight accommodation at Aston Business School, and breakfast and lunch on May 26.
