Rising to the challenge: frameworks for employability in the new HE landscape (Birmingham)

  • Date: 13 Apr 2011
  • Location/venue: Birmingham , England, B4 7XG

The Higher Education Academy is organising two interactive one-day events, one to be held in Birmingham and the other in London, to support the sector in enhancing their institutional frameworks for employability.

Employability development in higher education is becoming an increasingly important policy agenda. HE providers have started to redesign their approaches to ensure students develop the key transferable skills and attributes employers require. In an increasingly competitive market place graduates need to feel confident in securing and maintaining employment and should be able to reflect on their learning and achievements and to articulate this for employers.

These events will be led by the Higher Education Academy with contributions from managers in HEIs who are developing and implementing frameworks for employability. They will provide a space for practitioners to review their existing approaches to developing graduate employability and consider how best to implement and embed approaches.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore:

  • why a strategic approach  is beneficial for enhancing the student learning experience;
  • the content of a framework/strategy and how this should be reflected in employability statements from the point of view of the  student, employer, academic and careers adviser;
  • innovative approaches to developing and implementing a framework for employability.

Discussion groups will consider a range of related topics and will be of interest to senior managers and officers with responsibility for developing employability strategies, teaching and learning developers; careers and student services managers; academics involved in curriculum review and student representatives.

The intended outcomes of these workshops are to:

  • provide delegates with an enhanced understanding of an institutional framework for employability, how such a framework could be developed, who should be involved and how it can be managed;
  • stimulate ideas for how a strategy/framework could be taken forward and/or areas for further  development in their own institution;
  • access/foster the network/community of practice.

There is no charge for this event.
