Workshop: Teaching Islamic Studies in Scotland

  • Date: 21 Oct 2011
  • Location/venue: Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, EH8 9LD

Following on from the workshop held in October 2010, the Islamic Studies Network, in partnership with the Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre at the University of Edinburgh, is holding a second cross-disciplinary workshop for those working in Islamic Studies and related disciplines at higher education institutions in Scotland.

This event aims to bring together teachers of Islamic Studies from a wide range of disciplines (e.g. Theology and Religious Studies, History, Politics, Literature, Sociology, Anthropology, Law, Business and Finance), and is open to both specialists and non-specialists who teach on modules related to Islam. This will be an opportunity for practitioners to network, share practice, update colleagues on developments since the last workshop, and discuss region-specific issues in the teaching of Islamic Studies.  It will also be an occasion for participants to hear about some of the teaching resources currently being developed by colleagues in the sector.

Although the workshop is primarily aimed at those working in Islamic Studies in Scotland, participants from other regions are also welcome to attend. Further workshops will be held in Leeds (January 2012), London (March 2012) and Wales (May 2012). PhD students are also welcome to attend, though they may also be interested in attending the Islamic Studies Network’s residential postgraduate workshop to be held in February 2012.

This workshop is free to attend for employees and postgraduates of both public and private higher education institutions. The online bookings for this workshop have now closed, if you are interested in attending this workshop please email; externalevents@heacademy.ac.uk to enquire about avaiability.
