Crossing Virtual Boundaries - Teaching and Research with Online Synchronous Learning Environments

  • Date: 10 Jun 2011
  • Location/venue: Queen Margaret University, Scotland

This event aims to raise awareness of the potential for using online synchronous environments (OSLE) in teaching and educational research in higher education.

The event is being supported by the Higher Education Academy subject centres for Medicine, Dentistry & Veterinary Medicine (MEDEV), for Dance, Drama and Music (PALATINE), and the JISC Regional Support Centre Scotland North and East.

It has been conceived as a hybrid event, consisting of a workshop taking place in Edinburgh and a simultaneous real-time online forum for remote delegates using Elluminate web conferencing software.

The event is intended to facilitate the transfer of skills and knowledge about the educational use of OSLEs – getting beyond the technology.

Topics to be explored include:

  • Case studies from the Medical Sciences using OSLE;
  • Case studies from a PALATINE Development Award that explored the use of online synchronous learning environments across disciplines within the School of Drama and Creative
  • Industries at Queen Margaret University;
  • Exploring student attitudes to using OSLE in learning and teaching;
  • Exploring staff attitudes to using OSLE in learning, teaching and research;
  • Guidelines for using OSLE;
  • Exploring the options: open source;
  • Accessibility and legal issues.
