Open Educational Resources in Languages

  • Date: 1 Jun 2012
  • Start Time: 09:30 am
  • Location/venue: Harrington Building, University of Central Lancashire, Preston, Lancashire, UK, PR1 2HE

This event was hosted as part of the Higher Education Academy's OER Workshop and Seminar Series

09.30-16.00

Information about the event:

This event provided language educators with a thorough overview of open educational resources (OERs) in their discipline by combining a number of perspectives, including staff development, student production, teaching quality and organizational challenges. It was aimed at language educators with no previous experience of the field and presented them with a chance to reflect on the opportunities as well as the barriers that often accompany the use of OERs. Participants were introduced to examples of good practice and had the opportunity to network with a range of presenters with experience of designing and implementing OER projects specifically in a language context. The format of the event included interactive sessions combining both theory and practice in four main areas of engagement:

Engaging Institutions: Changing the OER Culture in your Institution
Engaging Language Educators: OERs and Staff Development
Engaging Language Students: OERs and the Student as Producer
Engaging Quality Assurance: OERs and Teaching Quality

In addition there was an opportunity to consolidate what had been learned from the event in a “Hands-on Workshop” session in a campus ICT suite in which participants were able to apply their knowledge and explore examples of good practice and sites of interest. Finally, a closing panel considered “Future Directions in OERs in Languages in the UK” and the importance of establishing a UK wide OER network of practitioners, researchers and policymakers to carry the engagement theme further.
