Mapping Internationalisation in the Classics: a survey of study/travel abroad programmes for UK Classics Students

Status: complete

Funding Initiative: Teaching development fund/mini projects

Description

The project involved a complete survey of all UK Classics Departments (and the British Schools abroad in Ankara, Athens and Rome) in order to determine the presence and role of international study or travel abroad programmes or opportunities catering specifically to the needs of UK HE students following degree programmes in Classics and related disciplines, in terms of:
- Longer-term programmes (Year or semester/term abroad)
- Shorter-term programmes (study tours, fieldtrips, short courses abroad, etc)
- Individual programmes or courses with integrated travel abroad components
- Other opportunities including guidance or encouragements for individual travel

The project addressed issues of accessibility, funding, provision, promotion, curriculum integration and recognition of international programme elements and the extent to which such opportunities are permitted, facilitated, promoted, mandated, or organised by the Home Institutions or Professional bodies.

Key words: classics, student mobility, study abroad, curriculum internationalisation

The project aims to provide a clear, accessible, comparative and centralised picture of internationalisation in UK Classics programmes.

The project aims to create a foundation for broader discussion of the nature of cross-institutional and international collaboration and reflection on the accessibility, relevance and goals of study or educational travel abroad as an integral element of degree programmes in Classics subjects.

The following materials are attached below: project abstract, findings summary, information sheet for students, final report.

Please note: The information listed in this report represents a survey of international study mobility options for students in the subject araea during the period of the survey (2009/10) and it is not necessarily indicative of current opportunities.
