Round 1 Teaching Development Grant
The socio-politics of archaeology and the past is now one of the mainstream areas in the archaeological U/G and (increasingly) MA curriculum (e.g. MAs in Heritage, Public Archaeology, Museums etc) in the UK, USA and other parts of the world. The proliferation of courses in the field has pointed to the need for appropriate, up-to-date and accessible teaching materials. Moreover, the nature of this sub-field requires materials which will demonstrate the diverse ways by which the past and archaeology are deployed in contemporary life (e.g. depictions of the past in visual representations and media), and expose some of the complexities of the issue, by allowing multivocal teaching and learning to be developed (e.g. media which allow interactive communication and feedback from the communities and groups discussed, especially in situations of contested heritage).
This project aimed at investigating the themes and topics covered in the UG and PG courses on the sociopolitics of the past and the contemporary uses of archaeology, and based upon these results develop appropriate, up-to-date and teaching materials to facilitate the teaching and learning in these courses.
