Practical Work Portfolios and Field Experience: an evaluation of modes of assessment for archaeological skills

Status: in progress

Funding Initiative: Teaching development fund/mini projects

Description

Round 4 Teaching Development Grant

The project aims to review the success of the University of Glasgow's strategy in the teaching of practical archaeological skills in its Level 2 Archaeology course. The course has met with critical acclaim in recent years in seeking to provide students with a range of practical skills; through the building of a Portfolio of practical work, and through students' own critical evaluation of their fieldwork experience in a Fieldwork Report. The University has recently restructured Level 2 Archaeology, piloting a residential fieldschool, with a view to taking the teaching of practical skills out of the classroom and embedding it within a practical real-life authentic situation. The project will review the success of this strategy, and will be of wider value to the archaeological community, providing tangible evidence to discuss how to deliver and assess practical applied skills.
