Projects

Meeting the Learning Needs of Metal Detectorists

    Status: complete

Funding Initiative: Teaching development fund/mini projects

    Description

    Round 5 Teaching Development Grant

A stated outcome of the project proposal was, 'that by the end of the project we will have a better understanding of the attitudes to adult/higher education after creative dialogue with local metal detectorists and will have obtained constructive feedback about how we can meet their learning needs'.

This final report presents the results of research examining these two issues. A questionnaire and focus groups were used to find out why traditional archaeology courses do not attract metal detectorists despite a clear interest in the subject. Feedback was sought and obtained about how higher education institutions can meet the learning needs of metal detectorists and what sort of courses they would like to see offered. The project has provided sound evidence upon which to develop and deliver courses to satisfy local needs.
