Laconia Virtual Archaeology Project (LAVA)

Status: in progress

Description

LAVA allows groups of students to participate in a computer-simulated archaeological excavation which includes planning, execution and publication tasks. The project facilitates aspects of learning that can only normally be provided on a restricted and relatively expensive basis i.e. on a real excavation. At the same time, it allows students the opportunity to experience the extent of preparation, organization and fund-raising that goes into a field project which they may not necessarily get, even on a real project.

The simulated excavation enhances the students’ educational experience facilitating their engagement in realistic, experiential, collaborative and reflective learning situations. In this approach activities are aimed at enabling the construction of knowledge and development of skills. In addition the student is given an active and central role in the learning process.

LAVA helps students develop a number of transferable skills and attitudes. Team working is enhanced through the emphasis on collaboration and enhanced presence. Research skills, report writing and experience of management are also developed.
Flexibility of delivery is promoted by: facilitating anytime/ anywhere access to the excavation, through the provision of multiple paths through the learning environment; and through varying the level of guidance provided depending on the experience of the learner.
LAVA will be made freely available through the distribution of source material on DVD. A running version will also be accessible through the Internet. A depository for scenarios will be maintained allowing the wider community to both benefit from and contribute to the development of the resource.
