This report represents the most complete survey of fieldwork teaching undertaken in the UK.
Following an introduction on the importance of fieldwork training, and the changing level of financial support available to universities over the last 15 years, the authors provide data on the nature of fieldwork training and assessment at 44 higher education institutions, based on a survey undertaken in Spring 2011. The data included covers the fieldwork training requirements for students on degree programmes, the forms of assessment by which fieldwork skills are examined, the average levels of financial support per student for this provision, and the proportions of academic staff actively engaged in fieldwork training. The report concludes with a provocative discussion about the extent to which current fieldwork provision in the UK can realistically prepare graduates for a career in professional field archaeology, and with implications drawn for university departments and professional archaeological organisations alike.
