External Examining

We are leading a programme of research and development work to support external examiners. It is one of the thematic areas of enquiry that form part of the Academy's strategic plan.

The research and development process is open, transparent and democratic and involves as many people with different perspectives as possible.

The following areas have been identified for research and development:

• Finding out more about what external examiners actually do and what information and support would be helpful
• Strengthening external examiner communities through networks
• Developing a dedicated website and electronic handbook for external examiners
• Promoting brokerage services in Subject Centres
• Examining the idea of a voluntary continuing professional development that might be used to support external examiners
• Exploring how we might recognise institutional programmes for the preparation and development of external examiners

History

The HCA Subject Centre sponsors a Register of External Examiners of History. This register works as a 'dating agency' where History Departments in need of External Examiners can find academics willing to take on those duties. For further information on using or joining the Register please contact the History team in the first instance.
