Our Staff

As of 31 July 2011 the Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Subject Centre will cease to exist in its current form, with future subject-level support to be provided from the Higher Education Academy via Discipline Leads. As a result of the restructure many members of HLST are being made redundant, but their details are retained here in consideration for their years of work for the subject centre.

 

Clive Robertson, Director

Clive has enjoyed a long and successful career in higher education, and enjoys an excellent reputation as an academic leader and innovator. He was formerly Head of Student Learning Experience at Oxford Brookes University and prior to that  Head of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. He has been Director of the Hospitality, Leisure Sport and Tourism Network of the Higher Education Academy since its inception in 2000 and has been Director of the Business, Management, Accountancy and Finance Network since 2008. Earlier, he served as Dean and as Head of Quality Assurance in the university's Business Faculty, both roles involving extensive experience of validation and review of business programmes at home and abroad.

He has been an active contributor to a range of developments in higher education, particularly credit accumulation and transfer and work-based learning and its accreditation. He represented Brookes on the Executive Board of Progress South Central, the Lifelong Learning Network for Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey, and is a member of the Board of the Open College Network South East Region and a Trustee of the Learning from Experience Trust. He was a member of HEFCE's FDTL5 panel, and has contributed to the work of QAA in its review of the Code of Practice and development of Subject Benchmarks. He has extensive experience as an external examiner and external advisor at home and abroad. He is a former chair of the UK Council for Hospitality Management Education and was founding chair of its Industrial Tutors Group (now called PATH) and of its Learning, Teaching and Assessment Group.

Clive's work has involved establishing effective working relations with employers and industry bodies in promoting the industry/education nexus. He has also undertaken a range of research and consultancy contracts for industry which reflect his academic background in food science.

John Buswell, Assistant Director (until 31 December 2011)

John Buswell has been involved with the HLST Subject Centre since its inception in 2000 as the Liaison Officer for Leisure, and, now, as its Assistant Director (0.4 appointment). He is also Principal Lecturer in the Department of Leisure, Tourism and Hospitality Management at the University of Gloucestershire where, between 2004 and 2007, he was Director of the phase 5 FDTL Project ‘Meta: From PDP to CPD'. He is a member of the Open University Validation and Awards Committees, Chair of the Professional Development Board of ISPAL (the Institute of Sport, Parks and Leisure) and the HE Champion for the 14-19 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.

His research interests and publications are in pedagogy and in the area of service delivery and service quality in leisure, tourism and sport. He has co-authored a book on service quality in leisure and tourism and edited two other books in leisure management. He is a member of the Editorial Board of our ejournal, JoHLSTE and has recently co-edited the Enhancing Student-centred learning book for the HLST and BMAF Subject Centres.

Paul Radford, Centre Manager (until 31 December 2011)

Paul joined HLST in January 2007 as our new Subject Centre Manager, and has overall responsibility for co-ordinating and managing the administrative functions of both the HLST and BMAF subject centres. His previous experience includes 5 years working for Southampton Solent University in resource and information management positions; prior to that he spent time in the retail sector, both in customer services management and retail store management (including a period as branch manager for the Forbidden Planet sci-fi/comics chain).

He successfully completed an MBA in 2006 (studied part-time at Southampton Solent University), for which his dissertation assessed the extent to which a link exists between business size and approach to strategic planning, using the UK popular music industry as a case study. Paul's undergraduate studies were carried out at the University of Southampton (1993-1996) and Bournemouth University (1990-1992).

Samantha French, Publications Officer (until 31 December 2011)

Sam French joined us to undertake responsibility for our publications, LINK and the Journal for Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Education (JoHLSTE), and she also has similar responsibilities for BMAF publications. Sam's previous work experience includes a number of administrative positions in FE and the Health Service.

William Ross, Information Systems Officer (until 31 December 2011)

William started work as Web Development Assistant for both the BMAF and HLST subject centres in November 2008 and became Systems Information Officer in January 2011. Previously William studied English and History at the University of East Anglia and worked as a Senior/Children's Bookseller for Waterstone's bookshop. He completed a Certificate in Web Applications Development at the Open University in June 2010.

Patsy Kemp, Academic Developments Co-ordinator (until August 2011)

Patsy was responsible for developing and maintaining links with HE providers and other stakeholders, the organisation of events within the subject community, and the commissioning and production of materials and articles. Patsy has work experience across both public and private sectors in language teaching, business training and management consultancy. Before joining the HLST Subject Network, she was manager of the Enhancing Student Employability Co-ordination team.

After July 2011 Patsy Kemp will provide editorial input to the final issue of LINK and write a critical review of employability skills and their assessment in HLST programmes.

Dorota Maton-Mosurska, Legal and Finance Co-ordinator (until August 2011)

Dorota co-ordinated all of the financial and legal paperwork and procedures for both the HLST and BMAF Networks. She was responsible for the administrative management of numerous projects funded by both Networks, and liaised closely with departmental teams within Oxford Brookes with regards to preparation and administration of all legal and financial documentation. Dorota's previous work experience includes a number of positions in Higher Education Administration.

Karen Pettit, Events Officer (until August 2011)

Karen joined BMAF in Autumn 2006 in the combined role of PA to the Subject Centre Director/Associate Dean and BMAF Administrator. She subsequently moved over to being full-time BMAF Administrator, and following a recent re-structure is now the Events Officer for both BMAF and HLST Subject Centres co-hosted at Oxford Brookes. She supports and organises all events across both Subject Centres, including the Annual Conferences.

Shelley Rider, Learning Legacies Project Officer (until August 2011)

Shelley Rider is the learning legacies project officer at Oxford Brookes University. She has worked in universities for the last fifteen years in a variety of project and academic roles. These include a staff tutor for the Open University, a project co-ordinator for the University of the West of England and a role in business development working with employers on training and development. Her interests include evaluation and project management and she has a specialist qualification in executive coaching and mentoring. She has taught undergraduate programmes in the field of IT and technology and has undertaken management and curriculum development roles in the field of distance learning.

Stacey Neil - Subject Centres Administrator (until August 2011)

Stacey Neal joined HLST in December 2010 as the Subject Administrator for the HLST and BMAF Subject Centres to support both centres with various administrative duties.

Stacey has previous administration and customer focused experience in various positions in the Construction and Social housing industry and she also previously worked for Oxford Brookes University, as Administrator for Student Liaison. She has developed strong customer and colleague relationships in the various industries she has worked in over the years.
