Call for Proposals: Open Educational Resources for London 2012

Date: 19-May-2010

* UPDATE 28 July 2010 : The call for bids has now closed. We would like to thank all those who helped us with the bid or provided letters of support for the bid *

We intend to bid for Higher Education Academy/JISC funding to support the further development of resources which derive from or are related to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and which will enhance student engagement with learning.

Introduction
This work will grow from the foundations already laid through our initiative to establish an Olympics Special Interest Group; our well established working links with Podium, SkillsActive, People1st, the Institute of Hospitality and other external agencies; our excellent working links with Subject Associations, and our on-going collaborative work with LinkBC in Vancouver and colleagues in other Olympics host countries. Our newly developed Learning Legacies web site has been designed to provide a focus on opportunities for enhancing students’ learning opportunities and experiences which the Olympic and Paralympic Games afford and which we wish to harness. The site already includes original case studies and discussion starters, with more commissioned, and our plans to extend the range of resources available would be greatly boosted through an injection of dedicated funding.

Making Resources Available
Our proposal is to identify, develop, make accessible and promote the application of resources in three main areas:

  • Materials available in the public domain which are related to the planning and delivery of the 2012 Games and which can be used as case material or data in a range of student assignments in different subject areas and at different levels
  • Materials which make the wealth of research related to the Olympics and Paralympics accessible to a wider student audience
  • Learning resources related to the Olympics and Paralympics which are already in use and which can be made available for wider application

It is anticipated that these educational resources will support the achievement of a range of learning outcomes by students and we shall ensure that resources are presented in a way which identifies the learning outcomes for which they are considered most suited, including acquisition of knowledge and understanding as well as the development skills.

Our intention is to identify up to twenty individuals who will be funded, if our bid is successful, to lead development of resources in one or more of the above areas in relation to a particular theme. We propose that the themes identified in our work with LinkBC provide a framework.

How can you help?
We now invite:

  • i) Expressions of interest from individuals or groups who wish to contribute to our work as described above and to the next stages in the development of our bid for funding;
  • ii) Letters of support for our bid which will be submitted with it to the funders.

In response to either or both invitations please contact us, by 5th June 2010, at: hlst-learninglegacies@brookes.ac.uk
