Key Aims: The main aim was to create a new image for science, which is:

  • Relevant – using best practice in educational research to design better ways of teaching science.
  • Accessible – increasing the number of science students and supporting the learning of local science students.
  • Achievable – providing a significant new national resource base for science teaching.

Key Activities

  • Developing new materials for teaching scientific concepts.
  • Creating materials to suit the individual.
  • Applying modern assessment methods.
  • Raising the aspirations of local people to enter Higher Education through outreach.
  • Evaluating effectiveness of learning approaches.

7 lecturers in science, one of these being Sports Science, were appointed to provide sabbatical cover for CELS secondees to work on a range of projects connected with the five key areas of activity.

Materials Development

CELS developed a range of materials for teachers and pupils. These encouraged understanding in and help in the promotion of sports science.

CELS developed a set of individualised instruction materials, specifically designed for interdisciplinary science students with a range of subject backgrounds, e.g. sports science.

Assessment

CELS developed assessment strategies for large groups of students.

CELS investigated effective feedback strategies, including peer assessment and e-marking.

What was being offered to the wider teaching/subject community:

• CELS disseminated research findings and reports across the education communities.

• Teaching and learning materials that were developed were available for use via the CELS website (www.ntu.ac.uk/cels).

• CELS aimed to promote sports science (as well as other core and interdisciplinary) and ensure pupils and teachers understand the true nature of sports science at HE.
