Project Aims:

  • Establishing methods for the design, development and delivery of reusable learning objects.
  • Develop a range of multimedia learning objects that can be stored in repositories, accessed over the web and integrated into course delivery.
  • Research into pedagogical and organisational issues in using learning objects.

London Metropolitan is the lead site in partnership with Universities of Cambridge and Nottingham.

Activity

A number of projects at each of the three centres have already been completed and the RLOs have been used in teaching since Feb 2006 and are under on-going evaluation.
Some examples of the RLO are in Maths, Nursing, Language Learning, Business Studies and Study Skills.

A key design feature is that the RLOs help students reflect and learn, the RLOs are not simply about information delivery.
Working examples of RLOs can be accessed on the website.

Second Year Work:

90 learning objects were under development each year and being piloted across the three sites, including sports science (maths and biology), French and Spanish and Travel.

London Metropolitan, working closely with the Business School
- Study skills & H.E. Orientation for Business and Service Sector Management.

Nottingham – Study skills & H.E. Orientation, Stats. and Probability.

Cambridge – Inter-professional learning.

Also developed:

  • Design of learning environments
  • Mobile and ambient learning
  • Learning design
  • Blended learning

What was being offered to the wider teaching/subject community:

From year three onwards they offered generative learning objects, these allowed RLOs to be adapted by tutors for use across a broad spectrum of courses. Clearly the scope was tremendous across a range of subject disciplines and the team at London is particularly keen to build links with other Business Schools.

The team worked on putting the RLO’s into an Intra-library National Repository (JORUM /JISC) that would give FREE access to all tutors in HE.
