Careers Education

Following the national interest in the facilitation of Employability skills within programmes and the introduction of Personal Development Planning (PDP) within HE, careers education is increasingly featuring in HE curricula. Julia Horn from the Centre for Career Management Skills defined careers education as aiming to

‘.. develop understanding of careers in our own lives and in those of others, in different societies and cultures. This includes developing one's own sense of career and acquiring and deploying the skills, knowledge and experiences required to pursue personal aims and to respond to external demands after university' (Careers education and career-informed degree programmes in higher education).

University careers departments are often an excellent source of advice and provide services to academic programmes in addition to those that they offer to students. The QAA Code of practice section 8: career education, information and guidance, sets out the requirements regarding careers education in HE.
