CAA is the use of computers to assess student learning. This can focus on the use of objective tests, computer-mediated or online assessment. CAA is particularly appropriate for the assessment of large student groups where assessments can be marked automatically, saving time for staff. It can be used for diagnostic, formative or summative assessment, and as an efficient way to provide students with formative feedback, whilst also increasing feedback for lecturers on student progress. Virtual learning environments used by universities and colleges (such as Blackboard or Moodle) generally provide facilities for student on-line quizzes and formative assessment.
Perhaps the best starting point for considering CAA is the practical guide to on-line assessment available from the Assessing Learning in Australian Universities Website.
