In conjunction with a growing interest in Sustainability and ethics, CSR is also featuring increasingly in academic curricula. The European Commission defines CSR as:
"A concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis."
The European Commission recognises that CSR can make a significant contribution towards sustainability and competitiveness.
The European Commission reference document section provides a useful range of resources designed for SMEs in the toolkit section that may be suitable for use with students.
Business in the Community members commit to improve the way in which they manage their resources, be that their people or the planet. They are a catalyst for change and work in four areas the - workplace, marketplace, environment and the community through sharing knowledge and experience, and developing innovative solutions. The Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society (BRASS) is an ESRC funded research centre. Their research focuses on business sustainability and corporate social responsibility, and the relationships between businesses and their key stakeholders.
CSR Europe is a European business network for CSR. They provide a Road Map for CSR with linked resources and a European news service for current business initiatives.
