Critical Thinking

In higher education students are required to ‘think critically’ in their studies. However, it is often difficult to actually get across to students what is meant by this and what is required for them to achieve critical analysis. So it is necessary for staff to have a good understanding of the constituent elements of critical thinking and of how best to encourage students to develop their critical thinking skills.

The best starting point for considering critical thinking is a guide by Jenny Moon available from the ESCALATE subject centre website ‘We seek it here...a new perspective on the elusive activity of critical thinking: a theoretical and practical approach’.

There is also a very useful Learning and Teaching Guide on critical thinking by Teresa Leopold which includes example case studies available from the HLST website.

Critical Thinking on the Web is an on-line directory of resources in critical thinking.

The Foundation for Critical Thinking provides a range of resources; see for example their on-line model of critical thinking.
