Foundation Degrees

  • Foundation degrees were introduced in England and Northern Ireland in 2001.
  • They are a Level 5 qualification, equivalent to the first 2 years of a bachelors programme.
  • The are vocational higher education qualifications that have been designed to meet skills shortages in the workplace by combining academic study with work-based learning and experience.
  • They appeal to those who might not previously have considered higher education and so are a key driver to increase participation in HE.

The Quality Assurance Agency Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland includes a qualification descriptor for foundation degrees.

The QAA also provides a generic foundation degree qualification benchmark, this sets out the generic features and outcomes of a foundation degree and is useful to inform course development and quality assurance activities.

Foundation Degree Forward (fdf) is a key source of information and has an extensive website that gives links to their publications, validation services, case study examples and current foundation degree provision.
