Induction

The notion of the ‘student lifecycle’ demonstrates the different stages of potential student engagement in higher education.

Student Lifecycle Model

Induction is an important part of preparing students for life and study at university. Induction programmes for new students may be run between institutional and departmental levels and for various lengths of time. Existing students can make valuable contributions to induction of new students. For examples of induction activities in HLST courses see these case studies:

A chapter by Christine Keenan ‘Stepping Stones 2HE: Fresh Thinking for Introducing PDP to Freshers’ explains how PDP is introduced to new students through use of the Stepping Stones 2 HE website at Bournemouth University.
(Buswell, J and Becket, N. 2008, Enhancing student-centred learning in business management hospitality leisure sport tourism, Newbury: Threshold Press)

The Stepping Stones 2 HE website also provides activities and materials for students prior to attending the university.

Peer Assisted Learning is also used to support students across courses and during induction at Bournemouth University.

The University of Manchester has developed a 'Framework on induction and transitional support' that provides a good outline of considerations relating to induction.

The University of Sussex Induction website provides information for their new students.
