Internationalisation

Internationalisation occupies a prominent place on HE agendas and presents many challenges. HE is an important medium for cross-border flows of knowledge and people; international students are an important market for universities and universities are increasingly required to produce graduates capable of working in the ‘global village'.

The Higher Education Academy has identified priority areas in internationalisation as being:

  • Curriculum development to enhance the teaching and learning of all students, regardless of country of origin.
  • Helping ensure staff teaching an increasingly diverse student body have access to relevant information and resources.
  • Development of initiatives to enhance the learning experience of international students.
  • Supporting the sector in engaging with the Bologna process.

These priorities are also appropriate to HLST subject areas.

For those involved in teaching programmes a key area of concern will relate to developing global perspectives and ethics within the curriculum. The are three key drivers of this interest in developing global perspectives:

  1. Demand from students.
  2. Interest from academics.
  3. The wider impact of external factors in the economy and society.
