The Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Network aims to encourage and broker the sharing of good learning and teaching practice across our subject areas of UK higher education.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are increasingly being used in higher education. This might be to provide more flexibility in course delivery as students can access materials 24/7, to facilitate enhanced feedback to students so that they can check their understanding, or to increase efficiencies in assessment and marking.
The University of Leeds provides a good introduction to the use of multiple-choice tests and questions.
There is undoubtedly skill in writing good MCQs. Jerard Kehoe from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has written a useful article on writing MCQs in the Journal of Practical Assessment Research and Evaluation.
There is often concern that students can potentially pass a multiple choice test by guessing the answers, for information on alternative approaches to marking see an article by Martin Bush ‘Alternative marking schemes for on-line multiple-choice tests’.

(SPRInTA) was an FDTL funded project which developed on-line assessment and tutorial support for sports science students. Although the project has now finished, resources and sample questions are still available to download from their website.
A number of companies now provide programmes to enable the use of on-line multiple-choice assessment; see for example Question Mark.
