Research Excellence Framework

The quality of research in UK universities was previously assessed through the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The RAE is being replaced by a new approach, the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Consultation on the development of the new framework is underway and piloting of new approaches is underway. Guidance on the REF will be published in 2010 and the first REF will be undertaken in 2013.

The REF will focus on three elements:

  • outputs - the primary focus will be informed by citation information
  • impact - will be assessed by case studies, where benefits to the economy, society, public policy, culture and quality of life can be demonstrated
  • the research environment - will be considered in relation to how it supports research and its effective dissemination and application

Further information on the consultation, pilots and development of the framework can be found on the HEFCE website.

Research Excellence Framework Position Paper (89kb .pdf)
This position paper, written by HLST Associate Director Prof David Botterill, is the outcome of a review into the responces of the Subject Associations in the HLST subjects grouping to the consultation on the Research Excellence Framework(REF). It considers the possible impact of the REF on research in hospitality, leisure, sport and tourism, the teaching/research nexus, and the "visibility" of research in our subject areas.
