The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) is the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK. Its mission is to promote excellence in sport and exercise sciences.

BASES has three divisions:

  • education and professional development - promoting good practice in education and providing a framework for continued professional development;
  • physical activity for health - providing a forum for exercise scientists whose work involves them in physical activity, exercise and health settings to further the development of exercise science as a body of knowledge and skills and as a profession;
  • sport and performance - providing a forum for sport scientists and devoted to furthering the development of sport science as a body of knowledge and skills and as a profession.

The Institute for Sport, Parks and Leisure (ISPAL) is the professional membership body for sport, parks and leisure industry professionals. ISPAL was formed in January 2007 by the amalgamation of The Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management (ILAM) and The National Association of Sports Development (NASD). ISPAL aims to provide support, advocacy and professional development for those involved in the sports, parks and leisure industries. The Sector Skills Council for Sport is SkillsActive.

The QAA Subject Benchmark Statement outlines the curriculum for Sport.
