The HEA invited final year Teesside University interior design students Jennifer Wood and Helen Ng to present a conference paper at its fifth annual Art, design and media creative learning and teaching conference in London.

Jennifer and Helen co-presented their paper on students supporting students, with Teaching Fellow Richard Sober. In the paper they reflect on their experiences at Teesside, which has created student-centred resources and a buddy system for international students, designed to help first year students cope with starting university.

As well as presenting, Jennifer and Helen took part in a networking session with, among others, Professor Bruce Brown, Chair of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework for Art & Design and Aaron Porter, HEA Academic Associate and former President of the National Union of Students. They also participated in a discussion about the National Teaching Fellowships Scheme, and the ways of rewarding teaching in higher education.

Carolyn Bew, Art and Design Discipline Lead at the HEA, said: “The HEA believes that students should be actively involved in the development of their learning experiences, and we were delighted to invite Jennifer and Helen from Teesside University to speak at our conference. By empowering students to share their ideas through events like this conference, we can help both students and institutions to make a real difference to learning and teaching.”
