Widening Participation is concerned with addressing patterns of under-representation in HE, as certain groups of students are proportionally under-represented in the UK. Particular under-represented groups are those from lower socio-economic groups or working class backgrounds, low participation neighbourhoods and families with no experience of HE. Looked after children are a specific group who have very low rates of access to HE (approximately 1 in 100).
Definitions, target groups and approaches differ between the four countries in the UK, but in general all countries are concerned to see improvements relating to entry rates to HE; retention, achievement and progression; and subsequent opportunities in employment and learning. Our focus here is primarily on the student experience.
We have undertaken and commissioned a number of research studies relating to improving the experiences of students from diverse backgrounds. We work with institutions, partnerships and sector-wide bodies to develop evidence-informed approaches to improving the student experience, and transforming HE to make it more appropriate to the needs of a diverse student body. We have a programme of work to disseminate and learn from research and support institutional development.
This work forms part of a programme of activity to promote access and success for all students.
