Description

This symposium will focus on four key issues facing chemical education at the university level.

The four main topics (half day for each) and indicative themes are as follows:

Employability of chemistry graduates:

  • What are employers looking for in chemistry graduates?
  • What do employers need beyond the chemical industry need?
  • How can universities prepare undergraduates better for the world of work?
  • How can employers help?

Assessment:

  • How can we use assessment to drive learning?
  • Are traditional assessment methods still valid for today's undergraduates?
  • Can we lighten the assessment load and still meet learning outcomes?

Practical work:

  • How can we make better use of the time in the laboratory?
  • What new approaches to practical work are effective?
  • Are there valid alternatives to lab-based activities?

Problem solving:

  • How can we help students develop better problem solving skills?
  • What factors affect problem solving ability?
  • What novel approaches to problem solving are effective?
