Teaching concepts in the physical sciences through computer-based modelling

DATE: 29 Apr 2010
START TIME: 11:00 am
LOCATION/VENUE: Staff House, University of Hull, Hull, UK, HU6 7RX

Description

This seminar will examine the pedagogy of computer-based modelling as a means of teaching concepts in science, but especially in the physical sciences. Examples of different modelling tools will be illustrated, but the emphasis will be very much on the modelling methodology and this can be used to promote conceptual change.

This session will construct a cognitive view of the student-as-modeller by drawing on the educational and psychological literature on problemsolving, modelling and the construction of concepts.

Discussion will centre on the different ways modelling can be used in science education and participants will acquire a set of guiding principles for incorporating effective practices into their own teaching.
