Outreach in Collaboration III: The CELS Celebration event

DATE: 8 Jul 2010
LOCATION/VENUE: Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham, UK

Description

 If you are working in Science, Technology Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) at a UK university and want to learn more about how to develop and deliver high quality Outreach activities with schools and colleges then this event is for you.

The event will:
• Showcase proven models for HE STEM Outreach activity
• Demonstrate the value of collaboration in Outreach - with other universities, and STEM groups - to deliver activities which enhance widening participation and engage a range of school types and age groups
• Help you improve your current outreach /community engagement programmes.

The event is an innovative showcase STEM Outreach event with parallel activities to benefit both HE staff and young people. Over 500 young people will attend Outreach events on the day at CELS. It is supported by funding from the National HE STEM project.

As part of a structured programme, HE participants will experience:
1. Best practice outreach activities for young people, through the schools programme  - a series of workshops, talks and hands-on exhibits for different age groups in a range of STEM subjects will be taking place throughout the day;
2. For HE participants a parallel programme of focused workshops/talks by HE staff on how to design and run activities in a range of STEM disciplines;
3. Participate in structured observations and experiential learning from the programme of school activities at the event. This will allow participants to reflect on the styles and range of good practice in STEM outreach;
4. Share lessons gained by contributors on the benefits of collaborative working with other HEIs, professional bodies and employers, e.g. find out about the efficiency gains from working together across institutions on collaborative events;
5. Also get updated on STEM enrichment/Outreach/Widening Participation activities from other providers in National STEM programmes and professional bodies
