Maths Support

The Centre produces a range of resources to help support the teaching of maths to chemistry students. The Centre has a maths for chemistry special interest group (SIG) to allow the sharing of resources and good practice.

Maths Resource Database

A maths resource database has been put together by the RSC and Physical Sciences Centre to draw together some of the available maths resources. The resulting guide contains details about books, software and online resources available to support the teaching of maths to scientists. This is by no means a definitive list and we always welcome suggestions of suitable addition. To suggest a resource to anything, please email the Centre.

Maths, Stats and OR Network
The subject centre for maths has a wide range of resources available, many of which are suitable for scientists. The Centre produce a range of fact and formulae sheets (general facts and formulae, mechanics facts and formulae and probability and statistics facts, formulae and information) which can be ordered from the website.

Useful Data for Students

A folding sheet of equations and formulae designed for undergraduates. These can be downloaded and printed (A3) in your own institutions or multiple paper copies can be ordered from the Centre.

Development Projects

The Centre funds a number of projects, some of which provide maths support.

- A Modular Library of Resources for the Development of Mathematical Skills in the Physical Sciences, Paul C Yates, Keele University

- New Web-based Learning tools for Maths in Physical ChemistryKarl Ryder, Loughborough University

- LATEX/PDF Support Materials for Learning Mathematics, Dr Simon Belt, Dr Robin Horan and Dr Martin Lavelle, University of Plymouth

- Quantitative Skills in Forensic Science, Dr Craig Adam, Dr Peter Haycock and Dr Vladimir Zholobenko, School of Chemistry and Physics, Keele University

Newton's Mechanics: Who Needs It?

A report resulting from a two day symposium held in 2008 on the mechanics problem at the transition to university.  The report is intended to stimulate debate and, above all, action.

Understanding the UK Mathematics Curriculum Pre-Higher Education

The Maths, Stats & OR Network, in conjunction with the Subject Centres for Bioscience, Engineering, Information and Computer Sciences, Materials and Physical Sciences, commissioned Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) to compile a mathematics guide. This outlines what students with given prior qualifications in mathematics are likely to know and be able to do and is written for those within the HE sector.

Mathematics for Chemistry - facts & formulae

A folding sheet of facts and formulae designed for undergraduate chemistry students to support mathematics. This resource has been designed by Tony Coft, sigma CETL; Bridgette Duncombe, University of Bath; Upul Wijayantha, Loughborough University and Wendy Lawrenson, University of Aberdeen.  The Centre would like to thank these people for all their hard work pulling the information together and for all those who also gave feedback and suggestions. Feedback is welcome on how the sheet can be improved.

Paper copies are available, please email the Centre.
