"Bridging the Digital Divide: Widening participation and e-learning"

In a rapidly changing learning environment the project will explore ways of ensuring that students from low socio-economic groups (low SEGs), who have less access to ICT and may have less confidence in an e-learning environment, are able to take full advantage of virtual learning resources.

The project will have 5 major strands:-

  • A research component, gaining information from current students from low SEGs about the challenges they face in accessing and using ICT
  • A financial support strand.  The development of community based partnerships to enable local access to ICT facilities and support
  • The incorporation of the needs of low SEG students into developing models of student support
  • The development of a set of recommendations for further embedding ICT skill development through and across the curriculum

Together with course tutors and outreach workers, participating students will also form a reference group to guide the proposed changes and assist in measuring success.
